These are correct ways to ask both questions, yet they might sound a bit formal to a French native speaker, (at least in France), where you'll rather hear:
Qu'est-ce que tu vas faire pour t'améliorer?
Qu'est-ce que tu as fait pour t'améliorer?
Using "est-ce que" instead of inverting subject and verb is a more natural way of building questions when speaking, while making the inversion is more literary and more formal.
If you want to include "today" you can place it after "faire" or after "améliorer", both are possible and equally correct, just like in English, and the nuance is very subtle so feel free to use whichever you like the most:
Qu'est-ce que tu vas faire aujourd'hui pour t'améliorer?
Qu'est-ce que tu as fait aujourd'hui pour t'améliorer?
OR
Qu'est-ce que tu vas faire pour t'améliorer aujourd'hui?
Qu'est-ce que tu as fait pour t'améliorer aujourd'hui?
