You guessed right: both the definite articles Der/Die/Das and the personal pronouns Er/Sie/Es are correct and natural to mean "it".
Note that using the definite articles der/die/das tends to be a little more familiar than using the personal pronouns, so they tend to be more widely used in spoken German.
Yet both are perfectly fine in most contexts, the nuances are very subtle, so at first for this program to keep things simple we decided to introduce only der/die/das as "it", and we added er/sie/es only later (level 5)
