Hi Mark Mcalister,
There is no exact "reason" for a word to be feminine or masculine, so I can't give you a specific explanation for it, however there are some little tricks that can help you guess the gender of words (watch out there can always be a few exceptions though).
For example generally, most words ending in O are masculine, and most words ending in A are feminine, yet most words ending in -ção are generally feminine.
