Also can be confusing in German because it can be put in several places, and also because it can have several meanings..
Here in Fluenz 5 we use it in the sense of "So", to express a consequence, so to avoid more confusions for now, let's focus on this use.
When used in this sense, "also" can have 2 positions: it can be put right after the verb, in this case the order of the rest of the phrase stays the same, as in:
Du hast also nichts gegessen.
OR
Er isst kein Fleisch, wir müssen also vegetarisch kochen.
And it can also be used at the beginning of a sentence, in which case you need to invert verb and subject (keep in mind that in German the rule is that the verb goes in second position), as in:
Also hast du nichts gegessen
OR
Er isst kein Fleisch, also müssen wir vegetarisch kochen.
