The two verbs you're comparing have different structures in Spanish:
- Preguntar uses Indirect Objects because you usually ask something To someone, right?
Preguntarle algo a alguien, le pregunto...
- Llamar uses Direct Object because you don't "call something to someone", you just call someone, right?
Llamar a alguien, lo/la llamo
Sometimes it's very clear whether a verb should use direct or indirect objects, but in other cases it's a bit more complex, so my advice for you would be to make a list of those verbs and try to memorize them this way..
