Hi Dresden,
Here "dies" is used as a general demonstrative adjective meaning "this", as the opposite of "das = that".
"Dieser" would also be possible, in this case it would be a bit more specific as in "this one" is my passport, and not that one...
It is often used before the verb "to be", as in:
Dies ist...
Das ist...
