When Sonia makes that remark she is referring to the use of the article with the structure of "me gusta", not in general. When there is a significant difference in article usage, we usually point it out. If we don't mention anything it's because usage is the same in both languages and you can follow the English structure when translating into Spanish. So here Sonia mentioned it because in English you don't need the article when speaking in general and saying things like "I like fish", but in Spanish you do need the article: "Me gusta el pescado". For other structures such as the one you mentioned ("Yo quiero comprar pescado"), the article is not needed. Here the structure is the same in both languages.
