The difference is subtle, but it is there. In h?n, the letter "h" has a fairly hard sound, which is what makes it sound more similar to the "k" in kàn.
Spoken Mandarin is especially tough for English speakers because it sounds so different (as opposed to how Spanish sounds to an English speaker). Stick with it though. As your ear becomes more accustomed to how the language sounds, you'll have less and less trouble with issues like this one.

This is helpful but doesn't solve the problem! I suppose it's a matter of hearing some more......
