You’ve hit the nail on the head with the "este/ese" and "esto/eso." If you are using them before a noun you use este or esta, for example, "este auto" or "esta casa." You use "esto/eso" as a subject or complement of the sentence eg. "quiero comprar esto." instead of "quiero comprar este libro." It’s like in English if I was in a bookstore and had a book in my hand and told the shop assistant "I want to buy this" they’d understand just as much as if I had said "I want to buy this book," it all has to do with context.But be careful, because the plurals of "este" and "ese" are "estos" y "esos"
