te and le mean to you or for you so their use depends on the verb. Since esperar means to wait for or to wait, the word for is already in the verb so you need a direct object to complete the thought. If the verb is dar, meaning to give, you would say darle or darte meaning to give to you. Darlo would mean to give it, it (lo) being a direct object. Le is an indirect object pronoun.
