Hi David,
Acostarse literally means to lie down, but they use it as in the sense ’to go to bed’. If it’s late at night and your friend is yawning you could hear both ’me voy a acostar’/’voy a acostarme’ or ’voy a dormir’.
If someone is feeling lightheaded, you might tell them ’por que no te acuestas un rato’ ’why don’t you lie down for a while’, but you’re not telling them to sleep.
