The very idea of a reflexive verb is a verb in a sentence in which the subject and the object are the same. So when the "se" is removed the verb becomes a normal non-reflexive verb. In this case, many verbs do have a "second life" and verbs that you may have learned as non-reflexive can in turn be made reflexive. This website has a very clear explanation of the difference in both English and Spanish so you can get a clearer idea.

Thanks. I know that web site and use it frequently. The part that gets confusing is the "normal" verb may not mean anything close to the reflexive version (ie quedar = to meet, quedarse = to stay, probar = to prove, probarse = to try on...). Chalk that one up to more memorization ; )
