L' indirizzo was introduced in Italian 1, Session 12. The reason why l' indirizzo is said instead of 'il indirizzo' is because of the word starting with the vowel. Other examples of this is "l'uomo" and "l'automobile".

Sue, It is simply one of the words that are shortened: l' autobus, l' hotel, l' entrata, l' ufficio, l' uscita, l' aeroporto etc. I don't know if the 'vowel' explanation runs true since we have l' hotel which is masculine. I make a list of them, and memorize them. I've just added l' indirizzo. hahahaha Won't be starting lesson 12 until tomorrow but was checking ahead. Good luck.
PS Just noticed the date of Sue's post. Support didn't pick up on it for 5 months !! Gee, this forum thing isn't working. Not good.

Frank, as Kane indicated, with words beginning with a vowel, the l' apostrophe is used. In the case of hotel, even though H isn't a vowel, it is silent which makes the requirement for the l'. It might be easier just to remember this rule than to try to memorize.
