For à + le (masculine noun), it is changed to au. For à + la (feminine noun) you use à la.
If the noun starts with a vowel or a h and a vowel ( hôtel for example), you use à l', regardless if the noun is masculine or femine.
So
à + le = au - au magasin
à + les = aux -
aux maisons
but no changes for
à + la -
à la banque
or
à + l' -
à l'hôpital
