Good Morning David,The not using ’la’ before an a word is only sometimes. "La arena" is correct. You change the la for an el, in cases where the that first ’a’ sound is the stressed syllable. So this is most 2 syllable a/ha words (eg agua, hacha) or a/ha words that begin with an stressed a and the accent mark written over it (eg. águila). I hope this makes sense. http://www.spanishgrammargenius.com/w... to keep in mind with these gender changing articles on the ’a’ words is that the word itself does not actually change from feminine to masculine, it’s just for the sound. So if you use an adjective, eg. "el agua fria" the adjective stays feminine.
