You're in luck. I am also a native new yorker and I've lived in China for nearly two years now. Beijing has wonderful world class hotels, or just some good quality low cost ones, depending on what you are looking for. I recommend using elong.net to find what your looking for and in what price range. If you want to stay close to the center of the city just look for anything near line 2 on the subway. Dongzhimen or Andingmen are probably two of the best located places with ots of hotels to choose from. Sanlitune is the place to go to see the nightlife (very near dongzhimen). It also has many great places nearby, such the the village (a shopping plaza) and worker's stadium. During the day you can just jump on subway line two and go right to tiananmen. Here is the famous tiananmen square and the forbidden city is right across the street. Better than the forbidden city is the summer palace. I forget which subway line to take but it is in the northern part of the city and very near to the olympic plaza. If you just want to see some classic style Chinese architecture you can also go to yong he gong temple.
