The difference is very subtle. In a way "allá" can seem a bit more general, further away. "Allí" gives the sense that the location is close by or very specific. Nonetheless, both can be used and you will not be incorrect.
You will find that in Latin America "allá" is used more often, and in Spain people mostly use "allí".

When you start listening to Spanish radio and watching Spanish TV, you'll also hear ahí and acá.
I believe that ahí is basically the same as allá (which, as Sonia said, is a less precise allí) while acá is a less precise aquí. The good thing is that ahí sounds a lot like allí and acá is sort of close to aquí.

Is aquel or aquella ever used? I was taught during high school that these are used to mean further away (i.e., in distance, it goes aqui, alli, aquel). However, in all my time in Latin America, I never heard them. All my HS teachers were Spanish, so perhaps they're used in Spain?
