For some surreal or just plain old quirky films check out the director
Jean-Pierre Jeunet. I really love his films. Also be sure to see
anything else with the adorable Audrey Tautou in it (but not all her
films are in French unfortunately). Some good comedies are L'auberge
Espagnole (the French apartment) and its sequel Russian Dolls. If
you're more into action, check out District 13 and it's sequel
starring the French founders of parkour (continuous Jackie Chan style
stunts more about the spectacle than the martial arts). A heart
warming drama set in Nazi occupied France in WWII is Monsieur
Batignole starring Gérard Jugnot. I hope these suggestions help. If
you see anything else good in French, feel free to share it here!
Cheers and happy movie hunting!

I'm a big fan of Francois Truffaut and Jean Luc Godard. If you're not a film buff Truffaut is more accessible. But both are great introductions to the French New Wave of the 60s.

I was going to suggest Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, but I see that Jean-Pierre Jeunet has already been mentioned. Here's a few films I have in my library:
Le Pacte des Loups
Micmacs à tire-larigot
La Vie en Rose
Au Revoir, Les Enfants
Delicatessen
La Cite des Enfants Perdus
Between these movies and others, I have a pretty eclectic collection. If you watch all of these movies, you'll see how they're widely different from one another.
