Position of adverbs
In the Match the Phrases exercises near the end of the lesson, there is a sentence that reads: "I had to give identification first." which is matched with "J'ai dû donner une pièce d'identité d'abord." It was my understanding from earlier lessons that adverbs generally preceed the verb that they modify. In this sentence, it looks to me like d'abord modifies donner and that the phrase should be written as "J'ai dû d'abord donner une pièce d'identité." Can anyone explain why the sentence was written as it was and not with d'abord preceeding donner? Thanks in advance for any replies.
