Sorry, I didn't explain that I thought that in the above sentence fue was being used as was instead of went.

fue is from ser and is used when the description or condition is permanent, whereas estuve ( which means i was, by the way-- estuvo means it was) Ser is used instead of estar when you are describing a permanent feature. The trip occurs in the past tense but it was interesting-- that fact will not change, kind of like being tall or short, French or Cuban, Catholic orJewish, blonde or brunette, young or old, your profession(i am a cashier, eg). Estar connotes temporary such as one's health or condition such as sick or healthy, tired or rested, location of a person or object, so you would say estuve enfermo la semana pasada to say i was sick last week. There are specific circumstances to use the verbs for to be and you can find them in a good grammar book.
