We have traveled to Morocco twice--quite extensively on a bicycle tour in 2001, and then more briefly to Casablanca and Agadir on cruise stops in 2006. We loved the more remote areas of the country--Ouarzazate to Zagora, and then also into the High Atlas mountains, and finally to the resort city of Essaouria which was our favorite. Do not miss the dJemaa el-Fna in Marrakech--but we enjoyed in from one of the many balconied restaurants, after a brief walk through all the wonderful craziness. On our bike tour we had guides that helped us navigate the "enthusiastic entrepreneurs" (and yes, we did come home with two carpets that had not been in the plan!), so be aware that you will be viewed as a revenue opportunity. If bargaining is your thing, it can be fun--we were told to pay no more than 10% of the first asking price. Taxis often detour to a relative's shop where you are invited to join the owner for tea. Other than the aggressive sales pitches which did become annoying, we felt safe everywhere we traveled. French (and English) is widely spoken in the major cities. Outside in major towns, French is extensive except in the smallest of villages. Fez, which we did not get to, is supposed to be amazing. We did not find much to see in Casablanca, but a day trip to Rabat is interesting. Hope you have a wonderful time!
