Isn't it because "la mia famiglia" is a singular noun, just as "my family" is in English?
We don't say "my family are going to the store."

I was wondering if that was the reason....I was thinking my family,( they understood) want to go...

I think we often interchange how "my family" is used in English but that it's not in Italian. Always singular. There are a number of nouns that we consider collective(singular) and in italian they are plural and vice versa. Like "spaghetti" in italian is plural and we consider it singular. I guess we just have to learn them one by one...
