Gregory, I'm probably just a disk ahead of you, but I can offer you this: have patience. Every language is full of little quirks that make it hard to relate to other languages. Relating Spanish articles to English articles is a case in point, don't expect to get the full picture right away. However, if your curiosity just cannot be put off, I suggest a good reference work. I myself spend several hours a week nose buried in the 'Pocket Oxford Spanish Dictionary,' which has a decent if terse section on grammar. Mike's answer is correct. In the phrase 'Me gusta los camarones,' the subject is an unknown 'it', the direct object the shrimp, and the 'me' is the indirect object. Altogether: 'the universe pleases me with shrimp." Awesome.

Thank you Don for this explanation. Since it was posted almost a year ago, you may not see my thanks. I am very far from my days of learning and studying sentence structure and I was really thrown by this sudden change. I wish that Sonia could have called attention to it; but since she didn't, I am thankful for your clarification.
