Estas is the conjugated form of "you", whereas "esta" refers to the mother. So "Donde estas tu mama" would mean "Where is you your mom?"

agreed. why so formal? you would use the tu form with this question. their aversion of using the tu form is ponderous to me.

Because "está" is the conjugation of the verb "estar" for the third person singular, "ella esta". "Estás" is for the second person singular, "Tu estás". If you say it like you wrote it, means "Where are you mom"

imerani is absolutely correct. The verb "esta" relates to the mom, not to you -- therefore it's a third-person form of "estar."
