This is in Level 2, Session 2 where Isabella is shopping for gifts for her family. The clerk first shows her olive oil and then some wine. Then the clerk says: "Abbiamo anche questa." (We also have this(f)) which I understood that he was showing her something else (a feminine item) and was not referring to wine anymore. And Isabella says: "Questa è bella. Avete la stessa in un altro colore?" (This(f) is beautifull, Do you(p) have the same (female item) in another color?) She says "la stessa" because she is referring to the female item, whatever it is.

Tony is right. Here's the difference between what Sonia explains and the "la stressa" example you bring up:
The noun in "lo stresso colore" is the word "colore". The adjective is "stresso". Since "colore" is masculine, "stresso" must be masculine to agree with it.
However, in the sentence "Avete la stressa in un altro colore?", "la stressa" is acting as a pronoun. Since its taking the place of a feminine noun, it must take on the feminine form.
I know this is the same for Spanish, and I'm guessing its the same for French as well.

As far as I am concerned, you are right. The gender travels through out. I often find these issues on Fluenz and I check it with translate.google.com. That does not mean that I believe everything on there either but it is nice to have an additional option to check. Also, you can check with a native speaker i.e. via Skype if you have a study partner in Italy. Hope it helps.
