As a Spanish student in High School, I would say the biggest difference between Spain Spanish and Latin America Spanish is three things: the use of Vosotros(as), differences in several words (like trousers vs. pants), and cultural differences. Seeing as you live in the Southern United States, if you were to meet a native speaker, just assuming demographics, you would most likely encounter an individual from Latin America rather than Spain.
My advice would be to use Latin American Spanish and then move on to Spain Spanish as a supplement, if you wish, as it is, more or less, just additional concepts.
Yo he estudiado Espanol por cinco anos... si tienes preguntas, les dan a mi :D
