I fixed the problem myself by using the software update search application under system preferences and installing all available updates for mac os 10.5.8. I don't know which update did the trick, but it seems like it would be a good idea to post such information on your FAQ.

An update might solve it, but it also might not. Usually, this issue occurs because our installer isn't given permission to modify your Applications folder. To solve it, please follow these steps:
1) Open a Finder window
2) In the left-hand column, you should see an icon labeled Applications, probably right below your Home folder icon. Click that.
3) Once Applications is selected in the left column, press Cmd+i
4) In the new window that opens, you'll see a small lock icon in the bottom-right corner. If you don't see it, click the arrow next to "Sharing & Permissions" at the bottom of the window. You should now see the lock icon. Click that.
5) A new window will open where you'll need to enter your administrative password.
6) Once you've done that, the plus button (+) next to the lock icon will become enabled. Click that.
7) In the new window that opens, you should see your user name in the right side of the window. Select your user name, and then click the "Select" button.
8) That window will close, and you should now see your user name in the main section of Sharing & Permissions. In the privilege column, change your privilege to Read & Write.
9) Click the lock icon again, and then close the window. Now try installing the software again.
