I've got a few things that I do when I have free time. On iTunes, I subscribe to Deutsche Welle "slow news" podcast - they read the daily news in German but speak slowly so it's possible to understand some of it. There are a few other podcasts from DW that I subscribe to but they are older Deutsch Warum Nicht is a fun one. I'm also using my old Rosetta Stone program as a review (at least RS is not as worthless as it was initially!)

I supplement with Babbel.com - Fluenz and Babbel go hand-in-hand; then I watch German movies, and check out www.dw-world.de often to watch news and interesting German videos (all for free).

See if you can check out Muzzy DVD's from the library - they are lessons to teach children German and you can turn on the subtitles in English or German.

Mindy, I too am just starting on level 1. I've had friends tell me that Deutsch children's books are a good way to see your understanding grow.

You can try zattoo.com, it shows most of the free public tv here in Germany, maybe 20 channels. You may need to get a german vpn (just google free german vpn). I'm not sure how many channels you can get in the US with it. If you have a Roku device in the US you can get a subscription to Wieder.tv which is a service with channels in German that I think is based out of the midwest. You can also watch Tagesschau for free on Roku. I have been using a website called memrise.com that has a wordlist of supposedly the 1000 most common German words. I feel like most of the words are relevant and almost all of them have a pronunciation clip with them. If you think a word isn't that important for you to know you can choose to ignore the word. I feel like I have learned a lot of vocab using it. I have also been doing the free German course on Deutsch Welle which is ok and listening to the Mission Berlin from there also (there is an iphone app for it).

Go to Deutsche Welle here and listen to the news in German that is slowed down for German language learners. :)
