When spoken quickly, est-ce que sounds like "es que." It's not that the ce isn't pronounced. When pronouncing "est," you don't pronounce the "st." So you're hearing the "e" in est and the "c in ce.

You're totally right Chris! There are different ways to pronounce "ce" in French, you generally pronounce it fully, but sometimes like in this expression, the "e" is silent, as are the "st" in "est", what you hear is the "ê" in "est" and the "c" in "ce". So "est-ce que" is pronounced [êske]
