In my experience, Internet is usually "el", however in looking for a more documented response to this question, I found that this is totally ambiguous. Even posts by native Spanish speakers responding to the same question had widespread disagreement. And even the online dictionary for the Real Academia Español lists the gender as ambiguous.
However, "la bolsa" vs. "el bolso" is a different story. "El bolso" more specifically refers to a purse, while "la bolsa" refers more generally to "a bag".
