There are some exceptions to the contraction rule in French. Here there are:
Before
Oui --- Quand on vote, le oui indique (When you vote, yes means)
h aspiré --- as in: Je haïs (I hated), le héros (the hero) -- the h aspiré sounds like the h in "hohoho"
onze (eleven) --- Un groupe de onze membres (a group of eleven members)
"y" at the beginning of foreign words --- le yaourt (the yogurt), le yacht (the yatch)
There are several others, which you could look at this site: http://french.about.com/library/pronu... (section IV). If they seem too complicated at the moment, I would advice you too look at them when you're more advanced on your French studies. Hope this helps!
