There is a liason in French when used in this case. Because the next word starts with a vowel, you should pronounce the "t" on the end of est. It should sound like "eel ate alley". Now I understand your confusion between Sonia and the native speaker. The native speaker probably has a different dialect than what Sonia learned. Sonia is not wrong and the native speaker is not wrong. In France there are TONS of different French dialects. Someone from Provence would sound different than someone who was from Paris. As in English someone from Texas sounds different than someone who is from New York. I hope this answers your question. :) P.S. Also the native speaker is speaking MUCH faster than Sonia so the liason may be in there and were not catching it.
