You always use "Fui" and "Estuve" when speaking about yourself.
You use "Fui" when speaking both of a place you went "Fui allá" (I went/was there) or when describing actions, like: "Fui veloz" (I was fast). And it also means definite and not continuous actions. "Fui a la casa" (I went home). "Fui a la escuela" (I went to school).
Use "estuve" also when speaking of a place you went, e.g. "Estuve allá" (I went/was there) - perfectly interchangeable with "fui" in this sense. And also with continuing actions in the past, like: "Estuve buscando" (I was searching...) "Estuve pensando" (I was thinking...).
Now, in regards to "fue" and "estuvo" it is meant to describe other people or situations. "Fue" is the past of "ser" the verb of being, easily associated with human beings, so you need to use it to describe how people were, i.e.: "Fue una buena persona" (She was a good person). But you can use both "Fue" and "Estuvo" to describe situations, like: "La fiesta estuvo buena" (The party was good) or "La fiesta fue buena" (same translation).
Hope this helps!
