Fue is both a conjugation of "IR" and "SER", so it can mean both He/She/It/You Went, or He/She/It/ Was depending on the context of the sentence.

Hi Linda. It's tricky, because depending on the last vowel at the end of the verb, it can mean "It was" or "I went". Fui - means "I went" (Fui is the past of "ir" - to go). Fue - on the other hand, means "It was" (Fue is the past of "Ser" - to be). There is an example on session 26: "Ayer fue el cumpleaños de mi colega" (Yesterday, it was my colleague's birthday). Since it's written "Fue", then it means "it was". Hope this helps! And keep up the good work! Hasta luego!

I think Tyler has it right. My understanding from Sonia's explanation in one of the tutorials is that the simple past of "ser" and "ir" are exactly the same, throughout the conjugations. Fortunately, we learn later that the simple past of "ser" is not used as much as the imperfect.
