As far as I know you can say "Guten Morgen" as a salutation, as well as "Guten Tag" (Good day) or "Guten Abend" (Good evening) instead of "Hallo!". I'd say that it is more formal to say "Guten Morgen" than "Hallo", since the latter by itself will be used more in casual setting with people you already know. You can of course use "Hallo" in "Hallo, wie geht's?" (Hello, how are you?) when you're greeting other people, and it will be a formal salutation. Hope this helps!

Usually Guten Morgen = Hello >> more formal, good for strangers
and
Hallo = Hi >> casual, what you'd say to friends
But that said, I don't think you'd be wrong mixing and matching - the Germans and Austrians that I have met were just happy that I put the effort into speaking their language :)

Thank you for the explanations! I was just being analytical, given that the translation wasn't exact. It's just me being me and wanting it to be perfect.

At least up to lesson 17 where I am. G1 is consistent in expecting "Guten Tag" for "hello".
