First small success :)
Just wanted to share my smile of the day: I've been working with Mandarin 1+2 for about two weeks now (pushing fairly hard, as I have a trip in less than a month), and I found myself buying hair accessories for/with my girlfriend in a mall yesterday. We noticed the assistant seemed like she might be Chinese, and my girlfriend asked an indirect question about "where's your accent from" and it transpired that she was indeed from a town near Beijing. So, we left to think about what we might buy, parting with "xie xie, zaijian" which made the girl beam and reply in kind. So, when I returned, I managed to order "one of these, and three of those" in Mandarin. Not only that, but she congratulated me on my accent and command of tones. It felt really good to actually be successful, and really boosted my confidence for when I'll have to make myself understood or starve!
Thanks Sonia :)
