Allow me to add my two cents. In all my conversations and writing with native German speakers, the verb "gefallen" is generally used when someone is trying to express that they "like" something specific. Der Film gefällt mir sehr. Die Leistung der Mannschaft hat mir gut gefallen. Wie gefällt dir diese Gemälde? It this case you are generally referring to something specific like the film or the team's performance or the painting. The verb "mag" is the present tense of the modal "mögen" which is often used in Konjuntiv II form to express polite desire. Bitte, ich möchte die Rechnung bezahlen. In its present tense (mag) it refers to liking something more general. Ich mag Filme. Magst du Sport? Hopefully this is helpful to you Tony. Das würde mir sehr gefallen. :-)
