Hola Antoinette,
I'm just a beginner in Spanish but my understanding is en would be used for physical objects or places. For example, you can be in a car, at a hotel, on a boat. 'De' should be used for non-physical things like 'de vacaciones' and 'de trabajo'. So, look at 'en' as being physically in/on/at a object and you can't physically be sitting on vacation or work.
