Is it "à côté de" or "à côté des"?
During the explanation of the dialogue, the words next to Sonia are "Oui, et à côté des ascenseurs . . ." but she says "Remember that 'à côté de'--that whole phrase--means 'next to.'" For adverbs of quantity ("combien de," "beaucoup de," "plus de," "moins de," etc.), the "de" does not agree with the noun that follows it (unless it is a specific noun). What is the rule for the prepositions that use "de" (such as "à côté de" and "près de") to contract with "le" and "les" and combine with "la"?
