Hi - although I'm taking the German course, I do speak French, so I hope I can help. The way I was taught to differentiate the two is to think of 'prendre' as 'to take' and 'emporter' as 'to bring'. If you break the roots in emporter down, it could transliterate as "to carry in or to (someplace)". Like James says above, emmener is strictly for carrying (taking) people somewhere. Prendre has a number of uses that you must translate contextually rather than literally.
