Yes there is a rule for verbs that require a preposition before an infinitive.
It looks like this: verb + a + infinitive.
The ones listed in my Italian book are as follows:
aiutare a + infinitive
andare a + infinitive
comminciare a + infinitive
continuare a + ...
divertersi a + ...
imparare a + ...
insegnare a + ...
mettersi a + ...
riuscire a + ...
venire a + ...
So you basically have the following: Io sono stata a comprare = andare a + infinito.
You might want to check with an Italian instructor though.
Hope that helps... Ciao!

That helps....but shouldn't it be "Io sono andato"? not "io sono stato"? I don't see "essere" in the list of verbs, so in that case would you need "a" before the infinitive?

Yes, you are correct... Io sono andata al negozio a comprare delle scarpe (for example.)
No "a' required for essere.
