thanks for posting this, I had the exact same question. I knew "caro" but "costoso" seemed to come out of the blue.

Agreed I had no idea where it come from and have missed it a few times because I keep putting caro

Ha! The minute I put in caro and saw the answer was costoso I remembered seeing this posts. No answer from Fluenz about it, though.

The dictionary displays many uses of "caro" other than "expensive" It is used as "dear" in salutations, for example. With regard to the cost of something, "caro" seems to besimilar to one of our less common uses of "dear" (used more often perhaps in British English) "Costoso" seems to be used only for "expensive" in Italian.
