I could very well be wrong about this, but from what I remember of studying German in college a few years ago, the northern accent is considered the more "proper" German. I think either one is probably correct and understandable, however.

Thanks for the response. So, is möchte pronounced "mur-kht-ah" or "mue-sht-ah"? Is it better to pronounce Ich as "Ish" rather than "Ihh"? We're moving to Switzerland next fall. I know Swiss German is different but I'd rather go for something more like that.

Sorry, I don't remember which pronunciation is which, although if I had to guess I'd say that the softer, more "sh" sounds are probably from the south. Swiss German, as I understand it, is an entirely different ball game (maybe sort of like American English vs. a Cockney accent?), so I'm not sure it's going to matter a lot which pronunciation you decide to use if you're in Switzerland.

Till Lindemann, the lead singer for Rammstein always pronounces ich as "ish". Listen to "Du Hast Mich"
He also loves to really roll the "r's" as well. They are the biggest band to ever come out of Germany.
Just thought I'd throw that out there. I love them.

There really is not "proper" way. I'm living in the south east of Germany and everyone here says "Ich" like "Ikh". I also took some of the audio lessons from Michel Thomas and he also pronounces Ich like "Ick". My suggestion, pick the one you like so it give you some personality.
