Overall I love the Fluenz experience and I would recommend it to anyone wanted to learn French. However if I had the option to design the lessons, I would have preferred the lessons started with every day conversation, rather than vocabulary that tends to focus more on what would be useful if one were planning a trip to Paris in the near future. I can certainly understand why they do it that way, because a lot of people use the software because they are planning a trip. However for me, there aren't any French restaurants or hotels in my near future.

CLE International makes some adult and adolescent books in French (mostly classics). They shorten them down and have 4 levels based on how many French words you know. Maybe you can find some on Amazon. Here is a link to an example of one: http://www.cle-inter.com/detail-97820...
You can also search Bilingual Books on Amazon and find a variety of English books translated. Kids books are the way to go though. Try some you read already when you were young and re-read them in French.

I like reading children's books as opposed to only getting books that specifically teach French because I think it gives a better idea of speech in day to day life.

There is a brand new series called My French Passport, Reading and Comprehension. You can find the level 1 at Amazon.com but also the U.K., Canada... The book is in color with pictures helping the comprehension of the 12 text in French, and illustrate the culture sections. There are true or false quizzes and Guess who I am exercises. The level 1 is really for true beginners who no knowledge of French grammar or conjugation and it progressively get more difficult. The audio recordings are available for free on the publisher's website: www.maidezpublishing.com (students' corner page). The level 2 of the series is about all the French celebrations and traditions (12 text in French, followed by cultural sections, true or false quizzes, questions). Hope this is helpful.
