I believe the reason for using the preposition with the article - Vorrei andare AL teatro - is because you are speaking about a specific type of theater. If you were to use the article without the preposition, say - Vorrei andare A teatro - you are speaking in general terms.

thanks. Guess this will be another one of those places where the tiny aspects of grammar trip me up.

I think someone from Fluenz really needs to answer these inconsistencies. If we can't rely on the instruction given, how can we learn properly?

Hi all,
I'm Apolonia from Fluenz. The rule is you don't use an article when speaking in general, you'd use it if you were referring to a specific theater. Although this is the rule, sometimes Italians actually use the article when speaking about this activity in general. So this is not really a mistake, but we'll change it in order to stick to the rule. Thanks for pointing this out.

Thanks for the clarification. So if I read this right, there is a general rule, but it is sometimes broken in casual conversation? (certainly true for English). I can live with that. :-)

Yes, Kristin. In all languages there are grammar rules that are sometimes broken when speaking. Also, let's not forget that Italian is a very "young" language and its use can vary from one region to another.
