Hope you have a great time. You will find among the younger Germans, a propensity to speak English quite readily. Its really hard at times to draw the line between being really nice and at the same time, wanting to interrupt them politely and practice your German. I've spent quite a bit of time in Germany and am going back in May to Berlin for 6 months of additional German language study. I know that Fluenz will have been a great help to me! Hope you get a chance to see Berlin!

Don't be upset if you use your German in a restaurant and the waiter replies in very good English.

Had a great trip. Paul, I have not been to Berlin since the Wall came down, but have fond memories of the city. Robert, I expected as much, but when answered in English, I would continue to plow through with German--except in once instance: We were in an Indian restaurant, and the owner greeted me in German, asked if we had a reservation (no), and had seated us with menus. May have even ordered wine, don't remember. Anyway, he went to the kitchen and started speaking English/English, so when he came back, we switched to English.
One of the highlights occurred while I was sitting on a bench in the city. An older woman-well, my age, around 60-ish sat down by me and started talking about how warm it was that day. We chatted on (in German), and she asked me if I was from that city. I replied no, I was an American. Doch, she said, your German is so good! We carried on for about 1/2 hour--I didn't understand everything she said, but I held my own.
