Best answer I can come up with is: that's just the way it is. But, also to me it really makes more sense to have the plural verb when you are referring to more than one peso. Rather, it would seem to me that the way we say it in English is a bit odd.

Is this the one on lesson 15? The dialog is about the person wanting to buy "muchas de esas" (lots of those). So the answer is "(esas) son diez pesos".

In lesson 10 a woman asked how much is it? (for the taxi ride). The cost of the taxi ride was 2 pesos (son dos pesos - which was translated to "it is 2 pesos"). It seems strange to me that the latinos would use "son" also. I'm accepting it as-is and moving on.

Must be that "Cuanto es" referes to the taxi ride, and "Son dos pesos" to the amount of pesos then!
Just buy more than one thing all the time, so you can always get it right :)

"Cuanto es" asks for the total cost of something. If the answer is more than "One" of something it must be expressed with the plural form of the verb. Another example is "Que hora es?" if the answer is "five o'clock" it would be expressed as "son las cinco."

I have a Spanish tutor in addition to doing the Fluenz program. I asked her this question a few weeks ago. She said if I'm referring to one item I should use "es" (e.g. la pluma es dos pesos) and if I'm referring to multiple items I should use "son" (e.g. las plumas son cinco pesos). I put it in Google Translate and it gives the same answers.

A native Spanish speaker here: as JP Stonestree's tutor indicated, "SON' refers to "PESOS" (both the plural forms). If the cost was 1 peso, the correct usage would be the singular form "ES". What am I doing in a Spanish forum? Well, my wife is learning the language and I'm checking out the site. Thus far, very impressed. Buena suerte.

Well now this is confusing. La pluma es dos pesos then that contradicts what tillamook says if "son" refers to "dos pesos"!
