What is interesting to me is that Fluenz made the conscious decision to go with the simple past for Spanish, to the exclusion of present perfect, while for French, they teach the present perfect only, to the exclusion of the simple past. I can only assume that they felt in each case, they were teaching what is more commonly used. Certainly that is true for the French; the simple past is generally seen mostly in written text, but not so much in conversation. Note that this also might have something to do with which version of Spanish you have; the original Fluenz Spanish, which I learned, was based primarily on Latin American Spanish.

I have Spanish for Spain. My guess was that it was, yes, ported over from the Latin American Spanish version. We supplement present perfect as we go along since that's almost exclusively how my wife's family speaks of the past.

She's now to Level 4 lesson 26 still on track to do a level a month for five months. Then one month of flash cards and we go back to Spain. Can't wait for her to see how different it will be now that she can defend herself in Spanish.
