Good question! I have been wondering this myself. I think Menü is used when referring to a set menu, where the dishes comes with an additional course ??? Not sure either.

I think they are the same thing. Die Speise means fare or food. Die Karte is a card or chart. So die Speisekarte is the food list or bill of fare. I think this was the original German word for what we call a menu and das Menü came later as an imported foreign word. According to Wikipedia, the word "menu" is French in origin, being derived from a Latin word.
