To type Spanish Characters on a standard keyboard I found the following information:
Use a punctuation mark followed by the desired letter to create Spanish accents. For example, when you want to type “á,” type an apostrophe and then the letter "a." For “é,” type an apostrophe and then the letter "e." The formula (apostrophe + letter) is the same for all vowels. For “ñ,” type "~" and then the letter "n." For “ü,” type a quotation mark and the letter "u."

My own notes based on above and some other reading:
For ( áíé ) just hit the apostrophe which produces nothing and then the letter to be accented.
For ñ, hold shift + ` releasing shift + n = ñ. For Ñ, hold shift again before hitting n to cap the Ñ.
For ¿ hold alt and type the key for /?
For ¡, hold alt and press the exclamation key. ! is done as usual on any keyboard. Shift + 1
